Jute fibre

Jute is obtained from the stems of the Corchorus plant and belongs to the family of bast fibres. After cotton, it is the most important natural fibre in terms of volume and is mainly used for packaging materials (e.g. bags), yarns and carpets. Jute fibres feature a high tensile strength combined with low elasticity which makes them ideal for yarns and fabrics.

Pros and cons
Jute fibre Properties

Advantages

  • Good biodegradability
  • High water absorption capacity
  • Large modulus

Disadvantages

  • Susceptible to rot/not weather-resistant
  • Low extensibility

Jute fibre
Manufacturing process

The Corchorus plant is now mainly cultivated in India and Bangladesh. After just 4 months, the plants can be harvested, and the fibres extracted from the stem. As with other natural fibres, this involves subjecting the stems to a water roasting process, after which the fibres can be removed, washed and dried.
