Polyvinyl alcohol fibre

Polyvinyl alcohol (or PVA for short) is formally the polymer of vinyl alcohol. It is also known under protected brand names such as Kuraray Poval®, Mowiflex® or Kuralon®. Unlike many other synthetic polymers, PVA is biodegradable in most cases. Depending on its composition and pre-treatment, PVA is easily soluble in water or absorbs it with swelling. Due to its hydrophilic character, polyvinyl alcohol can be easily embedded in polar matrices.

Our high-modulus, kidney-shaped PVA fibres have a diameter of approx. 13 µm and are available in various grindings and lengths.

Manufacturing process

Although polyvinyl alcohol is formally the polymer of vinyl alcohol, it cannot be made directly from it. Instead, the acetic acid ester of vinyl alcohol – known as vinyl acetate – is polymerised. The vinyl acetate polymer is hydrolysed in the subsequent step to release the hydroxyl groups of the vinyl alcohol again. The degree of hydrolysis (usually 85–98 %) essentially determines the properties of the PVA. Whereas incompletely hydrolysed PVA usually dissolves very well in cold water, fully hydrolysed PVA can only be dissolved in hot water, which takes a long time. The production of fibre from PVA can take place in a wet spinning process as well as in a dry spinning process.
