Elastomers

Elastomers are dimensionally stable, rubber-elastic and deformable plastics. Elastomers deform under tensile or compressive loads and return to their original shape after deformation.

  • Rubber bands
  • V-belts and timing belts
  • Seals

How fibres work in elastomers:

  • Less deformation under compressive load
  • Greater tear strength
  • Reduced cold contraction and heat expansion
  • Improved soundproofing properties
  • The fibre orientation results in higher resistance to longitudinal bending and a reduction in transverse bending
