Aramid fibre

The word ‘aramid’ is a composite of the words ‘aromatic’ and ‘polyamide’ and is also known by the protected brand names Twaron®, Nomex® and Kevlar®. The chemical name is para-phenylene terephthalamide or PPD-T. Aramid fibres are made up of yellow filaments with a diameter of around ten microns that are assembled into a thread. They feature a smooth surface and round cross-section. Although there are three main families of polyamides, para-aramid, para-aramid co-polymers and meta-aramid, at STW we only process para-aramid. Aramids are characterised by high thermal and chemical resistance, strength and elasticity as well as good flame resistance and dimensional stability.

Pros and cons
Aramid fibre Properties

Advantages

  • Very high tensile strength (similar to that of steel)
  • Tensile modulus that can be up to two times higher than glass
  • High modulus of elasticity
  • Greater damping properties than glass and carbon fibre
  • High temperature resistance
  • Flame retardant, does not melt
  • Good fatigue strength
  • High toughness and therefore excellent resistance to crack propagation
  • High elongation at break
  • Wear-resistant
  • Good chemical resistance to solvents and lubricants

Disadvantages

  • Not UV-resistant
  • Poor matrix adhesion due to hygroscopicity
  • Non-conductive
  • Aramids are attacked by very strong acids and alkalis

Aramid fibre
Manufacturing process

The para-aramid (also called para-phenylenediamine) is allowed to react with terephthaloyl dichloride (TDC). The resulting PPD-T is dissolved in a solvent. Due to its high concentration and anisotropic character, sulphuric acid is a very good solvent. This polymer is extruded and spun in a spinneret in
the standard classic wet spinning process. The resulting threads are cooled in a stream of air, then washed, dried and wound onto spools.
