Carbon fibre

Carbon fibres have become well known through their use in carbon fibre-reinforced components. Installed in racing or aerospace technology, these components have the highest requirements in terms of performance and resilience while also being lightweight. Accordingly, carbon fibres are characterised by high tensile, compressive and fatigue strengths combined with low weight.

Pros and cons
Carbon fibre Properties

  • Very high tensile strength
  • Low density (specific weight)
  • Very good electrical and thermal conductivity

  • Expensive
  • Lack of disposal concepts (landfill ban)

Carbon fibre
Manufacturing process

Carbon fibres are obtained by the pyrolysis of organic fibres in a process that is also called carbonisation. Although methods for producing carbon fibres from viscose fibres or pitch are well known, nowadays polyacrylonitrile fibres are mainly used as precursors. The fibres are heated in the absence of oxygen, causing elements such as nitrogen to volatilise from the material, leaving only carbon atoms. Varying the temperature between 1200–3000 °C and mechanically influencing the fibres during the pyrolysis process can affect the arrangement of the carbon atoms and thus also the properties of the resulting carbon fibre.
